What Is Self Talk?
Remember the last time a friend or family member caught you talking out loud to yourself? You probably felt a bit foolish. But you shouldn’t have. Because, although most of the conversations are conducted silently, the truth is, we all talk to ourselves. And we do it virtually all the time. This “self talk” is nothing more than the verbal expression of our thoughts. Unfortunately, most of us allow our thoughts, and the self-talk that expresses them, to function on autopilot. That is, we engage in a steady stream of internal conversation without ever attempting to actively control what say to ourselves. But we should. Because what we say when we talk to ourselves has a profound effect on our actions - and on our lives.
The Subconscious Mind and Positive Self Talk
In addition to your conscious mind - that part of your mind that creates thoughts and perceives the things that you are consciously aware of - you also have what psychologists have called a subconscious mind.
Your subconscious mind controls your automatic functions - the things that you do “subconsciously” or without thinking about them. In addition to functioning on a physical level to control things like heart rate and breathing, the subconscious mind also functions on a psychological level where it creates automatic behavioral patterns. And those behavior patterns will largely determine whether you succeed or fail at achieving your goals.
The Power of Positive Self Talk
Like the computer that sits on your desktop, the computer that is your subconscious mind is PROGRAMMED. How it is programmed will largely determine whether you succeed or fail at your goals - including your weight loss goals.
And that is determined largely by your self talk. Whenever you engage self talk you are actively programming your subconscious mind - and creating the behavior patterns that will either help you succeed or cause you to fail! When you engage in negative self talk by saying things like "I'm so fat" or "I just cant quit eating sweets" you are programming your brain to act in ways to ensure that you really are and that you cant quit eating sweets! Fortunately, the reverse is also true. When you replace negative self talk with positive self talk you re-program your subconscious mind to help you achieve those positive goals.
